잃어버린 열정은 영혼을 주름지게 한다

다음의 글은 태평양 전쟁 후 일본 주둔군 사령관이었던 맥아더 장군의 집무실에 액자로 걸려있던 이 시입니다. 당시 일본인 장교가 이 시를 읽어보고 소개를 한 것이 일본 전역에 퍼졌다고 합니다.

 

젊 음

젊음은 마음가짐이지, 삶의 한 때를 가리키는 것이 아니다. 젊음이란 장미 빛 뺨, 붉은 입술, 유연한 무릎의 문제가 아니라, 의지력, 상상의 질, 감성의 역동성의 문제이다. 젊음은 삶의 깊은 샘에서 솟구치는 신선함이며 겁내지 않는 용기, 안일을 뿌리치고 모험을 추구하는 기질을 의미한다.  

 

젊음은 스물의 청년보다 육십의 나이에서 흔히 존재한다. 단지 살아간 햇수가 많다고 늙는 것이 아니라 꿈을 상실함으로 늙는다. 나이는 피부를 주름지게 하지만 잃어버린 열정은 영혼을 주름지게 한다. 걱정, 두려움, 자기불신은 마음을 굽게 하고 영혼을 흙으로 되돌아가게 한다. 

 

예순이든 열여섯이든 모든 사람의 마음에는 이상한 것에 대한 호기심, 다음은 어떻게 될까 하는 어린이 같은 지칠 줄 모르는 궁금증 그리고 삶에는 환희가 있기 마련이다.  

 

당신의 마음 한 가운데, 그리고 나의 마음에 무선 통신소가 있어 사람으로부터 그리고 무한하신 분으로부터 아름다움, 소망, 기쁨, 용기 그리고 힘의 메시지를  받는 한 당신은 여전히 젊은이이다.  

 

안테나가 내려지고 당신의 영혼이 냉소주의의 차가운 눈으로, 그리고 비관주의의 얼음으로 덮이게 되면 그 때 당신은 스물의 나이라 하더라도 늙은이에 지나지 않는다. 그러나 안테나가 올라가 낙관주의의 전파를 수신한다면 당신은 여든의 나이라도 여전히 젊은이인 것이다.  

 

Youth

Youth is not a time of life, it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of 

rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, 

a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions;  

it is the freshness of the deep springs of life. 

Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, 

of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. 

 

This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. 

Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. 

We grow old by deserting our ideals. 

Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. 

Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust. 

 

Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being's heart the lure 

of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy 

of the game of living. 

 

In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; 

so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, 

courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young. 

 

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with the snows of 

cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty. 

But as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism,  

there is hope you may die young at eighty.
